The Black Death Plague Doctor:

A plague doctor was a special medical physician who saw those who had the Bubonic Plague. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which (according to the miasmatic theory of disease) was seen as the cause of infection. The protective suit consisted of a heavy fabric overcoat that was waxed. A wooden cane pointer was used to help examine the patient without touching.

Maurizo Cattelan’s All retrospective currently on show at the Guggenheim in New York until Jan 22.

Displayed dangling on ropes is virtually everything the artist has produced since 1989, including his infamous satirical sculptural works referencing Hitler, the Pope, JFK, and more.

I came across Dust, an ongoing project by Ujin Lee and Tom Edwards, by chance when roaming through random art channels. I enjoy the mystery of it. It is an interesting and thought-provoking series of photographs where dust appears to be exploding or being dispersed from mid-air in different locations with an almost haunting ectoplasm feel.

Fear, organized. Brian Rea, organizer of worry, “I discovered like most people I had a lot of fears — after a few months, I began to catalog them: physical fears, natural fears, political fears, random, emotional.” After 11 years in New York, he made lists of his own and those of the people around him to fill up a 7-meter-by-3.5-meter wall, an exhibition at the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona called Murals.

Flashback! A decade ago, Jarvis Rockwell’s “Maya” took over our Fitzpatrick Family Gallery in Building 4. Inspired by Hindu temples covered with sculptures of various gods, Rockwell replaced those with toys, action figures and dolls for an interesting discussion on contemporary Western culture.
Check out his more recent incarnation, “Maya IV,” on view as part of Downstreet Art in North Adams. https://www.facebook.com/JarvisRockwellsMaya#!/JarvisRockwellsMaya?sk=info
